Simple Start to the New Year

Simple Start to the New Year

Junior High, fifth period, Introduction to French: flunked mid-semester. High School, second period, Conversational French: didn’t get passed a simple ‘Bonjour et bienvenue’. College, Tuesday and Thursday mornings, French Level One: dropped out before mid-terms.

How many times do we yearn to learn a new skill or a new language, but we place too many obstacles and restrictions for things to be? We start with excitement, gather all the material and books we think we’ll need, yet, a few weeks if not days in, we throw in the towel because one little guideline is not in place for it to take place.

I've always wanted to learn French, but unconsciously I’d put it off—or sabotage the opportunities—thinking there's no time to take classes, go to school, or be around people who can practice with me. One day I was introduced to Duolingo and I started for 10 mins a day, mostly every day since May of last year (2016).

I'm learning French because I do it once a day for 10 mins. I don't place the stipulation on it that it must be done in a school or university, or with a large group of people, or that I should be more advanced to say I’m learning. It just is because I am doing it. I started all this on a whim, without thinking of the outcome or the reason why I needed to learn. Letting it flow as it needed ... maybe because I'll need it for some unexpected—yet enjoyable—reason, which will come to pass when I am fluent in it!!

In that moment of giving up, we don’t realize that things just are with the mere fact that they are. Once we start doing things we've always wanted to do, without even over-thinking them or planning for them, we are where we wanted to be—it just is because we've begun it.

Once we start doing things we’ve always wanted to do, without even over-thinking them or planning for them, we are where we wanted to be—it just is because we’ve begun it.

So, this year, let's start doing more of what we want, without placing so many obstacles in the way. Let's simplify and notice where we are, what we have, and move on from there. Let's not boggle ourselves with creating list after list after list of New Year resolutions, but rather, create a short note of things we want to start. Because just by taking that simple step, we've become different.

I’d like to know, what is one thing you’d like to start and accomplish this year? Please share in the comments below.

With much love and gratitude,
Lizelly
