Living A Happy Life With The Bare Essentials

Living A Happy Life With The Bare Essentials

Throughout life we’re taught by society to 'have' certain things in order to live a happy life. Go to college, get married by a X age, have two-and-a-half-kids to fit in your two-and-a-half bath home, buy a car, have pretty shoes, and a marble back-splash in the kitchen. But you get to a point where you realize that not everyone’s life is or needs to be so cookie-cutter.

My husband and I have always been in-tune to the same ideals. We love to travel, having freedom to choose what we do with our time and the projects we work on, and we’re both on the same plane regarding having kids: we don’t. Very anti-social-norms considering our conservative Mexican background. Albeit there’s struggles along the way to fulfilling our goals, we’re as happy as can be living in our quaint apartment and driving a used car.

Building out your own business is most definitely hard on the wallet. Especially if, like me, you left a secure salary to pursue such dream. It's not until we're living with the bare essentials that we notice all we NEED is so minimal. This, of course, is different for everyone, and it's not bad when you have better things than others. But we must be mindful of our emotional state when we 'can't' have what we 'want', and notice that those things we want may not be as important as we initially thought.

This past year has taught me to celebrate everyday life and be grateful for the simplest moments. Such as having no money for grand food outings so we stay in and have McDonald's for dinner while watching Netflix. Or snuggling in bed while watching Rick Steve's and planning our future trips. And, my favorite of all, visiting Balboa Park and just enjoying the day while we chat, read, and draw… truly our preferred activities!

The important theme here is simplicity: create memorable experiences of life’s smallest celebrations. Make those celebrations as special as can be with what you have at the moment.

What is one simple event you can transform into a memorable experience just by appreciating the fact that you can enjoy it? Please share in the comments below.

With much love and gratitude,
Lizelly
