What Calligraphy Taught Me About Life

What Calligraphy Taught Me About Life

From a young age I always enjoyed hand-writing. I may have been considered one of the better hand-writers in my classroom, and in my family I would be appointed the ‘un-official’ hand-letterer for any formal correspondence.

In recent years, though, I’ve been noticing my hand-writing skills have gone down-hill. I tend to write very fast, not paying attention to the letters, or misspelled words, and my hand, arm, and shoulder get very tense, which is reflected in the chicken-scratch I try to pass as writing.

With help of a calligraphy course I recently took, I was reminded to be gentle with the process and to slow down while writing each letter, word, and phrase.

We were taught that the purpose is not to write as fast as possible, but to capture the elegance and grace of each letterform.

I can’t help relate this to life and take it as a lesson of slowing down in our everyday, too. It’s as if my scribbled writing was a reflection of my current life state: stress, tension, and insecurity, all mindsets that distract us from truly appreciating the important moments.

What is one way you can slow down today to appreciate a moment of your life just a little more? Please share in the comments below.

With much love and gratitude,
Lizelly
